Comparing wheelchair power assist options involves more than looking at speed, range, or motor size. What matters most is how you want the chair to respond and how much control you want the device to take over.

What Is the Main Difference Between SMOOV, e-motion, and e-fix?

Start with the control style.


SMOOV one is a removable rear-mounted drive. It provides power from behind, but you still use the handrims to steer, slow down, and position your chair.


Alber e-motion M25 replaces your standard rear wheels with powered wheels. Sensors in the pushrims respond when you push, so you remain actively involved in propulsion.


Alber e-fix E35 or E36 converts a compatible manual wheelchair into a joystick-controlled electric setup. The motor handles movement and steering, so repeated handrim pushing is not required.


None of these systems is automatically the best choice. The right one depends on your strength, control preferences, wheelchair setup, vehicle, and regular routes.


SMOOV One: For a Compact Push From Behind

The Alber SMOOV one docks behind a compatible manual wheelchair and lets you keep your existing rear wheels.


The drive unit weighs 16 pounds and has a built-in 224Wh lithium-ion battery. With speeds of up to 6 mph, an estimated range of up to 12 miles, and a maximum weight of 310 pounds. Actual speed and range can vary with the user, wheelchair, terrain, temperature, and battery condition.


SMOOV may make sense when you want:

  • One removable power unit rather than two powered wheels

  • Help with ramps, long hallways, campuses, airports, or paved routes

  • To keep your regular rear wheels

  • To continue steering and braking through the handrims


The carrying handle is used to dock and undock the unit, and the product page notes that attachment may be possible while seated. That process is still worth testing with your own reach and chair setup.


SMOOV is not hands-free. You remain responsible for steering, braking, and keeping the chair under control.


e-motion M25: For Power With Every Push

The Alber e-motion M25 feels closer to traditional manual propulsion.


Each rear wheel contains a motor and battery. When you push the handrim, the system adds assistance. This may appeal to someone who wants help with fatigue or longer routes but still prefers the familiar push-and-steer motion.


The M25 is offered in 22-, 24-, and 25-inch wheel sizes. A standard 24-inch wheel weighs about 17.1 pounds, bringing the pair to roughly 34 pounds. The listing gives a maximum user weight of 330 pounds and a maximum total system weight of 418 pounds.


The wheels may add about three-quarters of an inch to one and a half inches to the wheelchair’s width, depending on the setup. Measure tight doorways, vehicle openings, desks, and other spaces you use regularly.


e-motion may suit you when you want:

  • Motor assistance that responds to each push

  • To remain actively involved in propulsion

  • Powered support on both rear wheels

The main practical question is transport. You will need to handle two powered wheels weighing about 17 pounds each. Some people prefer dividing the weight into two parts, while others find one rear-mounted unit easier to manage.

e-fix: For Joystick-Controlled Driving

The Alber e-fix E35 and E36 work differently from SMOOV and e-motion. Rather than assisting manual propulsion, e-fix adds powered wheels, a battery, and a joystick controller.


The E35 supports a maximum user weight of 260 pounds and is available with 22- or 24-inch wheels. The E36 uses 24-inch wheels and supports up to 350 pounds.


Both versions have a listed speed range of 0.3 to 3.75 mph. The E35 has an estimated range of up to 10 miles, while the E36 is listed at up to 11 miles. Range can change with terrain, user weight, temperature, and surface conditions.


Each drive wheel weighs about 17 pounds. The battery, control unit, and interface are separate components, and the complete system weighs about 42 pounds. The parts can be removed without tools, so you do not have to lift the full system at once.


e-fix may be worth considering when you want:

  • Joystick-controlled movement and steering

  • Less reliance on repeated handrim pushing

  • Removable components for transport

  • The option to uncouple the powered wheels for manual pushing

Think about the full loading routine:

  • Which parts need to be removed?

  • Can you reach and release them from your usual position?

  • What is the heaviest piece you will lift?

  • Will everything fit in your vehicle with the wheelchair?

  • Can you manage the process when tired or travelling alone?


A product that looks compact online may still be awkward if the lifting angle or storage space does not work for you.
